Summary
Hanging a heavy picture is a little more involved than
hanging a lightweight picture with a hook. These steps
show how to use a strip of wood (the batten) cut at
an angle along its length, to make a very secure
attachment for the picture, while still allowing it to
be removed from the wall easily:
1 Cutting the batten
2 Drilling clearance holes
3 Attaching one batten to the wall
4 Attaching the other batten to the frame
5 Hanging the frame
Tools
Jigsaw, drill, screwdriver
Materials
Screws, batten, wall plugs
Step 1 - Cutting the batten
Battens can be used to provide the extra support that
heavy pictures need. Use a piece of timber about 50mm
by 20mm,which is slightly shorter than the width of the
picture. Cut the timber 16mm from the top at an angle
of 45 degrees toward the centre. One piece is going to
attach to the wall, the other piece to the picture.
Because of the angle, one can be hung on the other.
Step 2 - Drilling clearance holes
The battens will fit together in the manner shown -
the lower piece will be attached to the wall, the upper
piece to the picture.Drill holes through the battens so
you can attach the halves of the batten to the picture
and the wall. Note that these holes need to be very
slightly larger than the shaft on the screws that will
be used to fix them.
Step 3 - Attaching one batten to the wall
Position the half batten on the wall and ensure it is
horizontal using a spirit level. Mark the position of
the holes on the wall with a bradawl. Drill the holes
and attach the half batten to the wall with the upper
edge on the outer side as shown.
Step 4 - Attaching the other batten to the frame
Screw the other half of the batten to the frame with
the lower edge on the outer side as shown, that is,
with the angle of the cut facing down as a mirror
image to the batten attached to the wall.
Step 5 - Hanging the frame
You can now hang the frame batten to the wall batten
as shown.
